"Samuel L Jackson is an icon for me because of where he came from and how he managed to turn his life around. He's now an A-list star and a brilliant actor."
Ashley Walters (actor) as Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction (Dir: Quentin Tarantino)

"My favourite icon is Nichelle Nichols aka Lt Uhuru from Star Trek. I think she's fantastic because when Star Trek started America was still segregated and here she was - a black woman on the biggest show on TV. She wasn't playing a maid but was in fact the Communications Officer on the Starship Enterprise. She was also involved in the first interracial kiss . Lucky old Captain Kirk!"
June Sarpong (TV presenter) as Nichelle Nichols in Star Trek

Every Generation Media and bfi Black World, supported by UK Film Council and the BBC are developing 100 Black Screen Icons, an interactive, high impact on-line voting project.

The world's first online poll of its kind, 100 Black Screen Icons will promote and celebrate black creative screen talent from the African Diaspora. Launching in March 2006 the final top 100 list will be announced in September 2006.

Spanning over one hundred years, the nominations list will be compiled with the help of the general public and an expert panel of film practitioners and critics. Comprising film directors, actors, composers and writers and covering a variety of film and TV genres and eras, 100 Black Screen Icons will reveal the lasting contribution of black creative talent to film culture. Ousmane Sembene to Halle Berry, Oscar Michieux to Ashley Walters, the project will focus on those who have, in some way, revolutionised the creative, political and social landscape of film and TV. The 100 Black Screen Icons poll will survive as a unique learning resource, incorporating a range of unique educational activities.

Nomination List

The nominations will be arranged into eight categories and will reflect a fair geographic, gender and era balance. The categories are:

1.100 Black Screen Icon of All Time
(The personality that has received the most votes overall.)

2. Favourite Black British Film/TV personality of the century

3. Favourite Actor

4. Favourite Actress

5. Favourite Director

6. Favourite producer

7. Favorite writer

8. Favourite composer

Detailed biographies will highlight the nominees' key achievements and black British talent will be especially highlighted. As well as honouring the usual suspects, the 100 Black Screen Icons poll will shed light on those unsung personalities whose contribution has furthered the development of global film and TV culture.
