National Missing Persons helpline is a 24hour free and confidential number 0500 700 700

For the first time the month of May was designated as Missing Persons Awareness Month. Missing persons organisations are urging people to get in touch and not lose time in searching for a lost relative. The key UK organisations working in the field of missing persons say that the sooner that people call the greater chance of their missing relative being found. The month includes 15th May which is National Missing Persons Awareness Day and UN Day of the Family.

"Families that have lost contact with their relations in the UK and abroad need to know that there is a great network of organisations that can assist in restoring family contact" says Wolla Bargee, Service Access Officer for the British Red Cross International Tracing and Message Service. " This unique collaboration aims to ensure that the general public is aware that such services are always available to all".

The website www.look4them.org.uk, which is a gateway to the main 8 organisations in the UK who deal with missing persons, was set up in 2001. The website receives over 3000 visits a month and the organisations featured* help thousands of families every year, and resolve about 70% of missing person cases.

May 2003 was Missing Persons Month and will include a number of events:

1st May (all month) Photographic Exhibition of missing persons at venues around UK (organised by NMPH). Galleries confirmed so far in Glasgow, Oxford, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, North Shields and Portsmouth. Also window displays featuring images of missing people in Selfridges shops in London and Manchester.
