The Author, Jak, as
the saying suggests, is a man of many talents
and indeed he has mastered many of these. He does however regard himself
primarily as an artist, i.e. a singer/songwriter, the medium most natural
to him in expressing his creativity. He was born in London during the
1960s to parents from the Caribbean but was raised by his evangelist
grandmother to whom the book is dedicated (along with his children),
with a church upbringing of the Pentecostal tradition. And it was as
leader of his church band The Conquerors that he had the opportunity
to develop his early musical creativity.
Jak recalls that while growing up he was always interested in learning
about the achievements of great people regardless of color. 1970s London
was, and still is the most cosmopolitan city in the UK, if not Europe.
However this was not often reflected on the TV or in the media. And
this was certainly true of the educational institutions of the time
with its teaching curriculum that had yet to embrace the new multi-cultural
dynamism that had become a new reality in the United Kingdom.
Nonetheless Jak looks back fondly on his school years remembering how
whenever there was a school general assembly he was asked to sing and
play the piano before the teachers and pupils. Ironically it was his
love affair with music that stimulated his interest in African beats
and rhythms as a whole and African American music in particular. This
in turn fuelled his interest in other achievements by people of color
in the United States and although he couldn't have known at the time,
he was laying the foundations for a subject he would later study more
meticulously.
From school Jak went to college to study sociology but soon quit to
join a newly formed pop band with a publishing deal and spent most of
the 1980s playing and recording experimental music. This included a
series of music workshops where he taught music to the unemployed. This
vocation prompted Jak to return back to his studies the result of which
later led to a new career as a peripatetic social worker.
Perhaps it was background or his experiences but because there was a
need for young black men in the social work profession Jak found the
majority of his case loads involved working with young people from the
black community which of course he himself was a part. About this time
he also became a part-time model and was used in an international advertising
campaign as the face of Interflora. This single campaign lasted for
three and a half years, and set a record for a black British male model.
It was, however, his experiences as a social worker that inspired him
to devise a multicultural educational package, which could be played
as a game.
Out of this educational package came two board games, one of which was
Nubian Jak. Initially the concept involved highlighting achievements
people of color had made to the U.K. and Europe. It became a world first
when released at the London Olympia's international toy fair in January
1995 to rave media and public reviews. Next a world version was researched
and developed resulting in its introduction to the U.S. in February
1996 to an equally enthusiastic reception. The brand has since developed
into an exciting series of multi-media and edutainment products and
included the latest Nu Millennium edition of the board game released
in the UK and the USA in 2000.

Nubian Jak
is the award winning board game which combines amazing pop trivia with
fantastic historical achievements and facts. Prior to its officially launch
at Toy 95 (UK) the concept had already began to attracted an underground
cult following.
Being "a world first" it was immediately embraced by a previously unrecognised
games buying public who helped Nubian Jak outsell many of the established
games like "Trivial Pursuits" and "Monopoly". This in-turn caught the
attention of the British media and the product was featured on the BBC
News, 11th Hour and Channel 1 News.
Nubian Jak was recommended by the industry magazine Games and Puzzles
as one of the top ten new games for that year and has since been dubbed
"the most original board game concept of the 1990s". In 1996 a "World
Edition" was introduced to New York which began creating a buzz among
many New York African Americans. Later that year back at London's Cyberia
Cafe, BBC News 24 filmed the world premier of a limited computerised version
which on the night was played over the Internet from people from all around
the world.
The Nu Millennium Edition of the board game Nubian Jak was officially
released in New York, February 2000AD and was greeted enthusiastically
from both the US and UK games industry. What sets Nubian Jak apart from
other games and makes it "A World First" is its use of fun and fascination.
The unique way it makes education from a global perspective accessible
to the masses in an entertaining format.
The game itself requires players to use strategy, skill and a bit of luck
to "Out Jak" and "Chill Out" their opponents while trying to get their
three Pyramid Jaks to three new Jak Zones. But it is the diverse amounts
of little known facts, astounding truths and pop trivia that makes the
board game so stunning. Highlighting the global achievements of people
of colour the concept has not only captured the imagination of a community,
it has crossed over to the mainstream.
"A very innovative concept"...Time Life
"A World First"... Inspired Magazine
"The Black Trivial Pursuit"...The Voice
"Highly recommended for everyone"...B.E.T.
"Global black history with the kind of fun pop trivia even the shallowest
of us can answer.".... Sky Magazine

How
to play Nubian Jak
Nubian Jak can be played individually (2-8 players) or in teams (6-24
Players). The game consists of a 51cm 1/4 folding board, 4 sets of 55
cards, 24 Pyramids(Jaks), a six sided dice and rules booklet.
On the Nubian Jak game board there are 4 areas as follows:
1. Jak Zone - Where players start and finish
2. Safety Zone - The first square (or last in new topic zones) Zone -
The 12 squares connected to the Jak Zones
4. Octo - Zone - The squares in the centre of the board
Zone area. This stops opponents from entering into that Topic.
Playing Nubian Jak involves skilful manoeuvring of the Jaks around the
board while always trying to out guess opponents and multiple choice questions.
The first to place three Jaks of the same colour in three separate new
Jak Zones is the winner.

IJAKADI
To play IJAKADI each player needs eight playing cards. Using all
the suits (i.e. Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spade) a player must get two
matching pairs to win. For example 9 of Hearts and 2 of Hearts with 9
of Clubs and 2 of Clubs (first pair), 4 of Diamonds, 5 of Diamonds with
4 of Spades and 5 of Spades (second pair).
Players take a card from the top of the deck looking to match with a card
in their hand. If player chooses to keep card they must discard one from
their hand. The first to balance their hand by getting 2 pairs calls IJAKADI
and is the winner.
